![]() This question of identity in all its forms is central to the novel. ![]() As protagonists Benny and Byron uncover the details of the many false starts and new beginnings their mother survived in her youth, first as a girl growing up on an unnamed Caribbean island and later as a young Black woman in the UK, they find their relatively simplistic understanding of their family to be built on a foundation of lies. Readers who enjoy gossip will likely savor the gradual reveal of character origin stories, family secrets and lies. This setup is tantalizing, and much of this novel reads like dishy diary entries. Reuniting to hear a recording their mother made shortly before her death, the siblings find themselves questioning how well they really knew their mother and if they have ever truly understood their family or themselves. ![]() How well do you know your own mother?
